Pain relief

Pain is a sure-fire way for our bodies to get our attention, and it’s one of the commonest concerns that people have when seeking input from yoga therapy. Pain is a warning sign that something isn’t right or can’t continue as it is. Pain signals come from injured, inflamed, compressed, and tense tissues via sensory nerves into the brain as conscious awareness. A natural motor (outgoing) response is to protect, avoid, or limit movement. Whilst this is great as a short-term response in acute injury, prolonged, or recurrent limitations (known as compensatory patterns) lead to habitual ways of movement that create discomfort and dysfunction that starts to feel normal, or inevitable.

Pain is not normal, or expected, regardless of age or ability

A holistic yoga therapy assessment explores:

  • Posture
  • Ways of movement (habitual patterns)
  • Breath patterns (if relevant)
  • Health history
  • Expectations and needs
