When we learn about the elements of our fundamental constitution (dosha type and balance) we can better understand the qualities and presence of the different elements in our body-minds, environments, and interactions
This governs how we feel
We figure out the things that make life easier to digest
…and the things that create dis-ease
If we’re feeling rough, dry, restless, or bloated there are foods with opposite qualities that can balance these elements and help to bring us closer to ease
Equally, there are foods that share the same rough, dry, light qualities that are likely to add to these symptoms
Food is medicine
With this knowledge, and experience of consequence, we aim to choose the food with the qualities we need more, or less of to feel well, and digest life
Yet Ayurveda isn’t about denial, avoidance or an “I can’t have that” attitude to food
It is about moderation, understanding, and choice
- 60% of our food choices are emotional in nature (at least!)
- 40% are functional – as in we need these elements, minerals and qualities for optimal body-mind balance and health
We learn to listen to the functional whenever we can
AND we acknowledge that the emotional body is as important as the physical, energetic, and spiritual bodies
Moderation means choice and consequence awareness
When we understand we make a considered choice and welcome the consequence – whatever that may be
We made that choice with full awareness
This is moderation
