There is a practice for every body
It can be hard to move when you have back pain so the thought of downward dog and bendy people might fill you with dread!
Practices may not suit every body…
And…there is a practice for every body.
Not all yoga classes are the same. Teachers come from different backgrounds and they are likely to have different levels of understanding and areas of interest. Because of this, it is wise to approach a yoga class with caution if you have a vulnerable back that is prone to discomfort.
If you are currently experiencing acute pain, or a resurgence of a common problem
…the best move is to first have an assessment with a yoga therapist to determine where the problem is likely to be coming from, and receive guidance and/ or manual therapy that will help to relieve back pain & create better movement.
Then
– joining a regular yoga class or developing a home practice can be a great way to move in the right ways and develop the support that you need to care for your back and have more freedom in your movement…not to mention cutting back, or eliminating pain killers (in many situations).
The type of class, and movements within it, need to be specific though to avoid movements that are ‘unhelpful’ or may even be detrimental to your back (depending on the cause and origin of the pain). This is where Yogatherapyworks can help…
Understanding how to move with ease in your body can help you to:
- Develop strength and stability in the deeper core muscles that support the spine
- Strengthen upper and lower back muscles to reduce strain and compression in the discs and disc spaces between the vertebrae
- Learn to move from your ‘centre’ – getting better mobility in your whole spine in the way that it was designed to move
- Become aware of postural and movement habits that may be contributing to back stress and strain
- Develop strategies to ‘catch’ your habits and make simple adjustments to live more comfortably and do more
- Train your breath to actually support your spine…and your movement
- Identify areas of tension to target dynamic stretching to the areas your body needs to mobilise and open more
- Learn simple rehabilitation exercises that you can do at home to continue to reduce and manage your pain beyond the class environment
